Treatment For Adults With ADD

ADD or attention deficit disorder is normally considered a disorder that only affects children but it can affect adults and can cause them problems during their entire lifetime as well. Between 2 and 5 percent of children suffer from ADD and while most children outgrow symptoms by the time they reach adulthood a percentage of these children will experience symptoms into adulthood. Adults with ADD face different challenges than children, but no matter how old a person is with ADD there are many treatment options available to help them deal with their symptoms and lead a happy successful life.

Adults with ADD have the same treatment options as children do and they include medication such as stimulants, behavioral therapy, and counseling. Adults can usually improve and control their symptoms by using a schedule and routine to manage their life and minimize their disorganization and lack of focus. Adults can also sometimes benefit from prescribed medications that are either pharmaceutical or natural that aid in focus and concentration.

Adults usually outgrow the hyperactive behavior that is suffered by children with ADD. If adults do continue to experience hyperactivity it is often in the form of restlessness instead of hyperactivity. The symptoms most common in adults with ADD are problems with time management, self-control, focusing on tasks, and future planning. These symptoms make it hard to cope with adult responsibilities and prevent many adults from succeeding in their life.

ADD does not develop in adulthood and Adults who have it are almost always diagnosed as having ADD as children or had the same symptoms but did not receive a diagnosis. The severity of a person's ADD symptoms gradually diminish as a child gets older but some children continue to have symptoms into adulthood. Thankfully treatments exist that help to relieve the challenges of having ADD at any age.
